On August 24th, the Public Safety Department in China received a report that revealed the existence of a sizable hole in the Shanxi province part of the Great Wall of China. Authorities investigated the site and found a man and a woman suspected of excavating a section of the monument known as the 32nd Great Wall.

According to local media, the investigation has indicated so far that the suspects were working near the site when they decided to widen an existing gap in the wall. Their goal was to shorten the distance they had to travel, and manage to go through the wall with an excavator (a digging vehicle). The suspects have been detained and are awaiting the case investigation.

TOURIST INVADES ITALIAN MONUMENT TO TAKE SELFIE

On September 3rd, another monument was vandalized when a tourist invaded the Fountain of Neptune (also known as Biancone) in Florence, Italy, and climbed on the sculpture to take a selfie. The mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, posted images of the moment on social media, criticizing the young man. According to Nardella, the artwork was not damaged. However, local media reported that part of the fountain’s horse and other structures were damaged. “Thanks to the cameras of the Municipality, he has been identified and will pay a hefty fi ne. There is no justification for vandalism of cultural heritage,” said the mayor.
