The toy company announced that it will make bricks using sugar cane as raw material. The first pieces will be made this year and will have the shape of trees and leaves. This is part of the company’s commitment to using sustainable materials in its products and packages by 2030.

LEGO says that the quality and look of the sustainable bricks will be the same as those made from conventional plastic. The only difference is that instead of being made from plastic that comes from petroleum, the pieces will be made of plastic that comes from sugar cane.

The advantage of using plants as raw material to make toys is that it will decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 50% when compared to making them with petroleum plastic. The data comes from the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States (EPA).
