In early April, a group of 19 cats that invaded Mexico’s National Palace (where the president works) received the “living fixed assets” honor. They are now under the official care of Mexico’s National Treasury. The title was granted by the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and was given to cats for the first time in the country’s history. From now on, the Mexican government must protect and provide permanent care for animals, just as it does with buildings and other heritage sites.
