THE JUVENTUDE Fora da Escola survey, which collects data on the reality of young Brazilians between 15 and 29 not enrolled in school or without a high school diploma, was published on March 8th. In 2022, around 9.8 million people were in this situation — this corresponds to 19.9% of people in this age group.
According to the survey, 73% of these young people plan to finish their studies at some point. According to the survey, the remaining 27% have different reasons for not wanting to finish high school, including: needing to work (27%); needing to take care of the family (17%); not having the patience to study (16%); and others (16%) do not have the desire or do not see the need to do so at this time.
Additionally, of the 9.8 million young people not attending school, 58% are men; 70% are black; 86% are no longer in the right age range to get mainstream schooling, and six out of ten have children — for women, this figure goes up to eight out of ten.
The survey was carried out by the Roberto Marinho Foundation in partnership with Itaú Educação e Trabalho, with technical collaboration from the Datafolha Institute, Conhecimento Social — Strategy and Management, and the Conhecimento Social Network. Over 1,643 young people from over 200 towns from 27 states throughout Brazil, not studying and without a high school diploma, were interviewed.
WHAT COULD BE DONE TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE RETURN TO STUDYING?*
(*this was one of the multiple-choice questions posed to interviewees)
41% Studying during certain hours and working during others.
35% Having a scholarship, monthly financial aid.
32% Having daycare where your children can stay while you study.
27% Having a safe journey to school.
25% Having free transportation to school.
22% Having flexible work schedules, with fewer hours.
