Max Woosey, 11, came up with a very different way of raising money to help a hospital in Devon, a county in England, where he lives. He camped in a tent in the garden at home for a year in memory of Rick, his friend and neighbor.  Rick died of cancer in February 2019 at the age of 74. Max used camping to create a donation campaign.

“I am raising money for the North Devon Hospice because they looked after our friend and enabled him to pass peacefully at home with those closest to him which was his final wish,” wrote Max on the campaign website. “Sadly, most of the funding is cancelled or closed due to Covid 19 so they are missing out on vital funds.”

The adventure started on March 29th, 2020 and has just completed a year. Max’s goal was to raise £ 100,000 (approximately R$ 780,000), but he ended up with five times as much: £ 518,000 (more than R$ 4 million). On the last day, Max encouraged other children to participate in the challenge and sleep in tents at home. About a thousand young people from all over the world have joined the campaign.

By the time this issue went to press, more than 28 thousand people had donated. The campaign is still on and, in the last post, Max is shown asleep in his tent on the 366th day. In the photo, he is lying down with the comic books he loves to read when camping. and says he is not going back to sleeping in his house yet.

Where did the idea of ​​camping for fund raising come from? Max explains: “My friend Rick gave me his tent before he died and made me promise to have an adventure so that’s what I’m doing ”. The boy has slept in the tent every night for a year – including Christmas, his birthday, and rainy days.

Because of strong winter storms, he has had to change his tent seven times during the campaign. Max confessed that, on some rainy nights, he had cried himself to sleep after he realized everything in the tent was wet.  However, he would gain his spirits back quickly and carry on with his promise until the end.
