A group of people bought an island to start their own “micronation”. The place they chose is in the Caribbean, 15 minutes by boat from the coast of Belize. It was named the Principality of Iceland. Inaugurated in March 2022, the goal of the island is to be a space where the group’s ideals, such as democracy, inclusion and sustainability, can be practiced.

To make the purchase possible, the friends held an online fundraiser, where investors could buy “quotas” of the island. Quotas give the right to vote in the micronation’s parliament. The group also plans to issue island passports and sell local lord and lady titles. The friends who started the principality also have titles there, including Prince Regent and Prime Minister.
