On February 11th, the Kansas City Chiefs won the 58th Super Bowl, the American football championship final of the National Football League, the NFL. The 25 to 22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers took place at the Allegiant Stadium, in Las Vegas, in the United States. This is the fourth title won by the Chiefs in the NFL (1969-70, 2020-21, 2022-23 and 2023-24) – check out the ranking of the championship’s biggest winners below.

The dispute was fierce until the last minute and, for the second time in the tournament’s history, there was overtime (additional minutes given in games that end in a draw in regular time) — the first Super Bowl that required this was in 2017. The Chiefs managed to tie in the last minutes of the game. During overtime, the 49ers regained the lead, but the score turned around with a play by Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback who was the season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the third time.

The NFL is the main American football tournament in the US and its final, the Super Bowl, is considered the biggest sporting event there. Every year, the game features a halftime show by a major artist. This year, the main attraction was Usher.

HOW IS AMERICAN FOOTBALL PLAYED?

YARDS: strips that divide the field and show the players’ progress.

GOALS: in addition to the touchdown, another way to score is by kicking the ball between the goal posts that form a “Y”.

PLAYERS: each team has 53 players, but only 11 can be on the fi eld. Players are divided into three categories: offense (which includes the quarterback, who starts the offense); defense; and specialists (such as the kicker, who kicks the ball between the goalposts to score extra points).

END ZONES: the two ends of the field; the primary goal of each team is to reach the opponent’s end zone with the ball, scoring a touchdown, which is worth six points (the highest possible score for a play).
