Replika is a computer program that talks to its users: it asks how the users’ day was, how they are doing and converts the responses into code. The goal of the bot (from robot) is to learn about the user’s personality and act like a real friend. To do that, it also uses social networks.

Available in English through the AppStore and Google Play, the platform uses artificial intelligence to give opinions and make observations about life. This is how it works: user replies are analyzed through a statistical system that looks for patterns in writing and mood so it can interact as a friend would. The App tries to be, as its name suggests, a “replica” of the user.

The bot has been criticized for making people too attached to it and not able to enjoy life as they should. Another criticism is that its users stop having real life experiences like spending time with friends and dating.

Where did the idea come from?

Replika was launched in 2017. It was created by 30-year-old Eugenia Kuyda. Eugenia had lost her best friend and missed him, so she decided to place all the messages they had exchanged in a bot. She would send messages to the  bot, and it would reply imitating her friend, Roman Mazurenko.
