An environmentally friendly city with 42,000 houses is being built in Singapore. Tengah will have a solar-powered air-cooling system and green areas and will ban cars in the central region. All of this will be done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The city’s 700-hectare area (which equals more than 600 football fields) once housed brick factories and military training camps. It has undergone reforestation since 2015 though. The first apartments should be ready in 2023. They will be priced starting at 82 thousand dollars (approximately 444 thousand reais).

Because of the number of trees and public gardens, the project has been nicknamed “Forest Town”. Pedestrians and cyclists will circulate in the “upper” level of the city, which will be full of greenery, while roads, cars and public services will be underground. According to those in charge of the project, the goal is to ensure a safer and more pleasant environment for all.

With a population of less than 6 million inhabitants, polluting gas emission per capita (per person) in Singapore is higher than in the United Kingdom and Malaysia (which have larger populations), according to Singapore’s National Climate Change Secretariat.

One reason for this is the use of air conditioning. The household appliance accounts for more than a third of energy consumption in Singaporean homes. According to the city’s energy company, the solar-powered cooling system common to all Tengah homes will generate an emission savings equivalent to taking 4,500 cars off the roads every year.

Additionally, “smart” lights will turn off when public spaces are unoccupied and digital monitors will detect when garbage has to be collected – bags of trash will be sucked from housing blocks into a storage space, which will do away with the use of trucks.
