The government of Mouscron, in Belgium, gives 100 hens every year to its residents. The initiative has been in place since 2007. Each hen eats close to one kilo of trash per week, so the idea is to use the hens to decrease organic trash from homes. To win a hen, people have to enroll in the program and hope to be selected. If chosen, people have to sign a contract where they promise to take care of the animal. This includes keeping it alive for at least two years.

1) Why did the town of Mouscron decide to give hens away?
A) So people in the city could have more contact with animals.
B) To make people take better care of hens.
C) To decrease organic trash from homes.
D) So residents do not have to buy eggs from the supermarkets.

2) What do you think about this initiative? Would this work where you live? Explain your answer.
