Close to 87% of the students on Earth cannot go to school or university because of the new coronavirus pandemic. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), teaching institutions in over 180 countries have been closed completely while in several other nations, they are partially open (information dated March 30th).

“The current situation imposes immense challenges for countries to be able to provide uninterrupted learning for all children and youth to continue to learn in an equitable manner”, said Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO’s Director-General.

To help students and educators face this crisis, the organisation will offer talks and online conferences with representatives from different countries. The goal is to share experiences with users on what they are doing in their countries due to the closure of educational institutions.

CONSEQUENCES

UNESCO has made a list of the impact the closures of schools could bring to students’ lives. Check out a few of them:

Lack of access to distance learning: Many children and young adults do not have technological devices or internet connections at home. Thus, they cannot have online classes and have less tools to learn with.

Nutrition: Many students rely on meals provided in schools and universities. Without them, they run the risk of not being fully nourished.

Children on their own: Some parents need to work and because they do not have help to take care of their children, they leave them home alone, which could be dangerous.
