Traditional orchestras play instruments made from expensive materials like metal. In the Vegetable Orchestra from Vienna, Austria, things are different: the ten instruments used by musicians are made from fresh legumes and vegetables.

The food is bought in the morning of the presentation. It is carved, cut, and punctured to bring carrot flutes, leek violins, and other instruments to life. The instruments are made from real food, so they last around six hours and need to be changed for every show.

The orchestra has been a success. It started out as a joke, but has performed more than 300 times in 21 years, always with a full house. The food that is not used in presentations is turned into soup and served to the audience that comes to the shows.
