Because of the war in Ukraine, which is still in conflict with Russia, the United Nations (UN) has decided to increase the amount it planned to raise for Ukrainians. In April, the idea was to allocate 2.25 billion US dollars (about 11.54 billion reais), but on August 8th, the amount was increased to 4.3 billion US dollars (or 22 billion in Brazilian currency). The aid is expected to last until the end of this year. Prior to this decision, it was supposed to be used between April and August 2022.

The UN aid will be provided to the Ukrainian population through supplies such as medicine, water bottles, personal hygiene items, ready-to eat meals (MREs), and canned food. Another reason for the increase in humanitarian aid is the coming European winter. Thus, as some areas in Ukraine have limited access to electricity, for example, the funds raised are also expected to be used to repair water and energy supply systems in conflict zones.

The new target was announced i n a daily press conference at the UN. On the occasion, the institution’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said that over a quarter of the Ukrainian population will need humanitarian aid in the coming months, which represents an increase of 2 million people compared to what had been forecasted in April.

To raise $4.3 billion, the UN is urging the international community to continue supporting and donating to the cause. The first target has already been met with 2.38 US billion dollars (approximately 12 billion reais) having been collected.

However for resources to reach the population of Ukraine, Russian and Ukrainian authorities would have to grant access to the affected regions. Since the beginning of the war, access has been extremely challenging in areas beyond th e control of the Ukrainian government.
