The renovation of the São Paulo state museum, also known as the Ipiranga Museum, will include a new device: sprinklers. They will be placed on the ceiling, and when activated by high temperatures, will spray water to combat fire. This measure is a response to the São Paulo justice department, which established in November 2018 that the museum should adopt emergency measures to ensure safety and prevent catastrophes like the fire that destroyed the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro last September.

The institution will also have a new entryway in the building’s basement, at the Independência Park level. The entrance can be reached through an elevator and two escalators. An observation deck will also be built on top of the building. The new areas to be built will cover six thousand square metres, which is almost the size of a football stadium.

The new areas are part of the museum’s remodelling and restoration project. The work is expected to begin in September of this year and should be finalised in September of 2022, when Brazil will celebrate 200 years since of its independence. The renovation, which will also restore the original colour of the building inaugurated in 1892, has an estimated cost of 160 million reais.

The museum has been closed for six years because of structural problems. One of the reasons for the delay in starting the renovation was the challenge of removing all 450 thousand items of the museum’s collection from the building. Papers, images, books, and magazines that tell part of Brazil’s history started being transferred to seven properties close to the museum in 2017. There are still 35 thousand objects to remove – it is expected that this will be concluded by July.
