Marvel, the American comic book publisher, announced on May 6th that it will launch an indigenous version of Captain America, the company’s famous hero. The character, who will be called Joe Gomez and come from the Kickapoo nation, will be very dedicated to his community.

“Every time a ship hits a bridge, or a major villain turns an entire street block into rubble, people like Joe rebuild everything,” explains Darcie Little Badger, a Native American descendant and one of the screenwriters who created the character. “Joe really enjoys helping his community survive and prosper (…). That is why he is willing to risk his life to save others. I know a lot of people like Joe – a lot of them are my indigenous relatives.”

The character will make his first comic appearance in August in the third edition of Marvel’s new series of magazines, called The Captain America of the United States. Aside from Joe, the publications will bring together other famous characters from the superhero stories, such as Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, and “Bucky” Barnes. The new series will be a tribute for Captain America’s 80th birthday.

From now on, Captain America will have three versions, which will be played by different characters:

Steve Rogers: the version that is most known by the public. He is in The Avengers movie.

Sam Wilson: After Steve Rogers retires, Sam takes over as Captain America in the Falcon and Winter Soldier series.

Joe Gomez: an indigenous person from the Kickapoo nation.
