On April 26th, the Formula 1 organization announced a new method of qualifying for the Grand Prix (GPs), which includes a race called sprint qualifying. In this scheme, the drivers will compete in a shorter, 100-kilometre race (about a third of a normal race) to determine which position each racer will start in at the official race, which is held on Sundays.

The new model will be tested in three of the 2021 season races. So far, the Formula 1 organizers have not disclosed which races the tests will take place in, but they have already said that two of tests will take place in Europe and one will be in another continent. The idea is to assess how sprint qualifying will work so that it can be used definitively starting in the 2022 season.

How does the qualifying race work?

Friday: there will be a qualifying race for the sprint qualifying. This dispute will determine the starting positions for the drivers in the sprint race.

Saturday: day when the sprint will take place. This race will determine the starting positions of the drivers in the official race. Also, under the new rules, the top three in the sprint race will earn points towards the Formula 1 World Championship: three points for first place, two for second, and one for third.

Sunday: day of the official race

Why is it important to start in a good position in the official race?

The driver who finishes first in the qualifying race earns the right to start in the pole position in the official competition, and thus has a better chance of winning the race.
