São Paulo’s government has passed a law that prohibits the use of noisy fireworks in the state’s capital. The goal is to make its population aware of the problems caused by fireworks’ noise and to protect animals and people.

Pets, especially cats and dogs, become stressed with fireworks. This happens because their hearing is more sensitive than that of humans, so they “hear more” noise. Also, the restlessness produced by noise can cause animals to get hurt when they look for shelter. Senior citizens and babies are also affected by fireworks’ booms.

Fireworks with low sound emission are still allowed. The law is valid in open and closed, public and private spaces in São Paulo state’s capital. In cities further inland like Campinas and Sorocaba, the use of these explosives has been banned since 2017. Other cities, such as Florianópolis, Curitiba, and Belo Horizonte, are also discussing laws to ban fireworks.
