E-sports (virtual games) players will be able to win medals at the next edition of the Asian Olympic Games, which will be held in Hangzhou, China, in September 2022. The novelty was announced on September 8th by event organizers. Overall, the competition will feature disputes in eight games, including FIFA, League Of Legends, and Hearthstone.

E-sports featured in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, but under the “test” category, where players did not receive medals. At next year’s event, the games will be part of the official program, which will give athletes the right to compete for gold, silver, or bronze medals.

“I believe we have ticked all the right boxes ensuring a high level of competition which promises great viewing for enthusiasts and casuals alike,” said the event’s general director, Husain Al-Musallam, in the announcement. 

What are the Asian Olympic Games?

A sports competition that brings together Asian countries and takes place every four years, each time in a different nation on the continent. In addition to e-sports, the event includes 86 other sports, such as soccer, artistic gymnastics, bowling and wushu (a type of Chinese martial art).

Examples of e-games that will be at the Asian Olympic Games

FIFA: game that simulates a football match.

League Of Legends: strategy game in which two teams face each other. The objective is to destroy the other team’s base.

Hearthstone: card game with mystical characters and elements. Whoever defeats the opponent first wins.
