A study by the British car company Jaguar Land Rover concluded that 63% of pedestrians worry about their safety when crossing the street. With that in mind, the company announced at the end of August that it will do tests with self-driving cars (which do not need a human driver) that have a very different look: they have “virtual eyes”. The goal is to create more friendly interaction with pedestrians. The virtual eyes are programmed to look for nearby pedestrians. When it finds someone, the car directs its “look” to that person and does not move. According to the company, the visual contact makes the pedestrian feel safer when crossing the street.
