On March 12th, the town of Nazaré Paulista, in the state of São Paulo, planted trees to honor those who died of Covid-19 in Brazil. The initiative is part of Healing Trees, an international movement that aims to plant a seedling for each victim, as a way of honoring the dead. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of November 2021, 5 million people had died from the new coronavirus. For this reason, the goal is to plant 5 million trees around the world by May 2022.

In Nazaré Paulista, 100 native (original from Brazil) seedlings were planted on the banks of the Atibainha dam. Members and volunteers from institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and social movements participated. The Institute for Ecological Research (IPÊ) donated all the seedlings used.

Before planting, a moment of silence was held to honor the victims of Covid-19. “This is a symbolic way we found to honor those who have died because of the pandemic (…)”, said Suzana Padua, president of IPÊ. “It is also a way for us to help regenerate life on the planet and reaffirm our right to a balanced environment.”

Founded in Costa Rica, the Healing Trees movement is present in 14 countries, including Mexico, Australia, and Nigeria. To take part in the campaign, just access the program’s website, fill out a form, and state how many seedlings you wish to plant and in which country. Then, it is time to plant.
