Every year, the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) publishes a list with the top-selling musical artists in the world. Results for the 2021 poll were released on February 24th.  BTS, the K-pop group, came in the top position for the second year in a row.

The group sent a video posted on IFPI’s social network. BTS’ leader, known under the stage name of RM, gave a speech thanking fans. “We’ve learned that this is the first time an artist has won Artist of the Year two years in a row, so we feel blessed by such a significant title,” he said. “Thanks to everyone, especially Army of course, for enjoying our music.” Army is what BTS calls their fan base.

The second place went to singer Taylor Swift, who had already placed first in 2019, and Adele came in third place. K-pop shows up again in ninth position with the band Seventeen.

The IFPI list is compiled according to the artist’s performance in physical and digital formats, such as downloads and reproductions in online platforms.

K-pop: South Korean style of music that mixes elements of pop, hip-hop, and electronic music.
