If you have watched Jorel’s Brother, Knights of the Zodiac, Zootopia, and Wreck it Ralph, you have certainly heard 50-year-old César Marchetti’s work. He is a voice actor and has lent his voice to characters in all these animated productions, bringing to life characters that range from animals to warriors. In Jorel’s Brother, for example, César dubbed Jorel’s father, Mr. Edson, as well as Danúbio, Wonderley, Director Lola, and Mr. Adelino.

The talent for imitating many voices led him to win the Brazilian Voice-over Oscar as Best Supporting Voice Actor for playing Rhadamanthys in Knights of the Zodiac. César earned  roles in movies, series, and even African soap operas.

Junior reporter Gisele R., 17, interviewed the voice actor to find out more about his journey in the profession. Check it out below:

How did your career in dubbing start?

I started doing theatre, taking classes, and acting in plays. Until a friend advised me to do a dubbing test because I always like playing with my voice, imitating people, and singing. That was in 1996. I ended up going to a studio in São Paulo, where I did an internship, because there were no courses for voice acting. I watched dubbings for a week, and after I understood how it worked, I took a test and started working in the area.

What was winning the Dubbing Oscar in 2008 for Best Supporting Voice Actor like?

It was a surprise because Guilherme Briggs, the voice actor for Rhadamanthys in Knights of the Zodiac, had something unexpected happen to him, so I was chosen to substitute him. Because the series’ fans chose me, I was concerned about doing a voice that they would all like. Because I was a replacement, I did not expect to be a contender, and much less, win a prize. I was very happy and I thanked the fans, especially for being able to take part in such an important series.

You have a voice that changes quite a bit and adapts to each character. Is this natural or did you work on it?

When I was about 10 or 11, I used to play imitating characters on a recorder, and I noticed that I enjoyed doing that. My cousin invited me to participate in a radio program, and I accepted. There, I developed my voice. When I joined the theatre, I also played different characters. To make funny faces, play villains and heroes was rather natural to me; I thought it was fun.

How does Jorel’s brother reach audiences of such different ages?

Jorel’s brother is an enthralling cartoon for those who watch it as well as for those who produce it. What helps it reach audiences of so many ages is the mind of Juliano Enrico, the series’ creator, because all the stories are tied to experiences that he or his friends had during their childhood and their thoughts when they were teenagers, be it about their relationship with their parents, dating, or politics. Aside from that, he is very close to his family, which helps depict the characters. Juliano is a close friend, so we feel very at ease, and this makes work playful and light.

What would you say to those who want to go into dubbing and acting?

If you like to listen to music, read, or go to the theatre or the movies, this is already a sign that you could be doing something tied to art. The main thing is to believe in yourself, because being an actor is not easy, especially in Brazil. It is a profession that demands a lot, and we never know if we will be successful at the start. It is always good to have a plan B, such as working on something else part of the day, but having some time to dedicate to the art. What makes a true artist is believing in the art that is inside you.
