The Chinese government has decided to use an unusual technique to stop a grasshopper contamination that has invaded the country: “calling” 100 thousand ducks to eat the insects. The birds were trained to go after the animals and eat them after hearing a whistle. The grasshoppers arrived in China in February, after travelling through a few countries in Africa including Somalia and Kenya.
The main problem with the infestation is that the grasshoppers feed on the plantations and it harms the local food stock. The number of insects has increased because of weather changes. There was a lot of rain and this created ideal conditions for grasshoppers to reproduce.
