Saana Hiremath lives in Florida, in the United States. She is 11 years old and describes herself as a girl who enjoys listening to music, swimming, and cycling. She also holds the world record for mathematical operations done in her head (without a calculator or pen and paper) in the Guinness Book of records.

To test Saana’s ability, the Guinness team created a twelve-digit multiplication problem. The girl walked blindfolded into the room where the math problem was and was only allowed to look at it when the timer was already counting down. She completed the challenge in less than ten minutes – and got the right answer, of course.

Saana’s pediatrician was the person who thought of calling Guinnes. Saana was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. Priya Hiremath, Saana’s mother, said she had always known that the girl had a talent for math. “We introduced the concept of multiplication to her for the very first time and she was able to answer instantly,” she said in an interview with the Spectrum News website.

Saana’s record can be challenged by anyone, including adults. She herself has the option to volunteer to overcome her own feat in the future.

What is Autism?

Also known as Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), autism causes some people’s brains to operate differently. Children with this disorder often find it difficult to communicate, whether it is through speech, gestures, or facial expressions. They may also feel uncomfortable around other people. This does not mean that they cannot relate to others, but that they have a different way of doing so.
