Indigenous leader Sônia Guajajara and researcher Tulio Oliveira were included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The two of them are the only Brazilians on the list released on May 23rd.

The survey reveals people who, according to the publication, stood out in their area of expertise throughout the year. People were placed in various categories, including artists, pioneers, and leaders.

The Brazilians were placed under pioneers, that is, people who are the first to pave the way in a given area. Both celebrated the feat on their Twitter accounts. “It is a huge honor to have an indigenous leader and activist on the list (…). Let’s work towards making Brazil better, one [country] that respects science, life, indigenous population, and nature”, wrote Tulio. Sônia, on the other hand, stated that the achievement belonged not only to her but to all native peoples: “[Time’s choice] is a recognition of the global indigenous struggle, which is collective and defends the future of all humanity.”

The list is compiled every year by Time magazine’s editors and staff. For 2022, in addition to the Brazilians, several people joined the list, including Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, and Andrew Garfield, the “Spider-Man: No Return Home” actor.

WHO ARE SÔNIA GUAJAJARA AND TULIO OLIVEIRA?

SÔNIA GUAJAJARA was born in the state of Maranhão in 1974. She is internationally known for defending indigenous peoples and standing up for nature conservation. She is currently the coordinator for the Articulation of Indigenous People of Brazil and a member of the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative, an initiative of the United Nations (UN).

TULIO OLIVEIRA was born in Brasília (Federal District) in 1976. Since 1997, he has been living in South Africa where he is currently the director of the country’s Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation. In November 2021, he received international recognition for leading one of the teams responsible for the discovery of the new Coronavirus omicron variant.
