After spending 13 years in Haiti, Brazilian troops started leaving the country on August 31st. The soldiers were part of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah). The goal of the mission was to ensure the country’s safety and help its people. The Haitians are among the poorest in the world. Brazilians were the leaders of the program. Troops from countries like Argentina and France also helped.

The UN believes that Haiti already has the conditions to sustain itself without Brazilian help. It is expected that the Brazilian military will return by October 15th. After that, the Brazilian Armed Forces plan to send as many as 800 soldiers to a country in Africa.

It has not yet been decided which African country Brazil’s peace mission will go to, but all signs point to the Central African Republic, which has been facing religious conflict and armed groups that threaten the safety of the population.

Blue Helmets

The United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions are programs where countries help other nations that are undergoing hardship such as poverty, war, and natural disasters. Currently, more than 100 thousand soldiers from 125 countries participate in these operations – they are the so-called Blue Helmets.
