ON MARCH 30TH, Nickecoy Bramwell, a 16-year- -old Jamaican runner, made history by breaking a record set by Usain Bolt in 2002. During the Carifta Games in Grenada, a country in the Caribbean, the sprinter clocked 47.26 seconds at the under-17s 400-meter race. The previous record at Carifta for this category was set 22 years ago by Bolt at 47.33 seconds.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to break the record. Since last summer, I have been eyeing the record, so it’s a great feeling I could come out here and get it. I just took my mind off it and focused on the record.” said the young man in an interview shortly after the race.

Nickecoy has reached important milestones in the sport. In January of this year, he set his best times with 10.94 seconds in 100 meters and, in February, with 21.45 seconds in 200 meters. So far, his best time in the 400 meters has been 46.75 seconds. By comparison, Bolt’s best mark in this category was in 2007 at 45.28 seconds.

What are the Carifta games?

It is an annual event held among the Member States of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) – the block of countries which was called the Caribbean Free Trade Association (Carifta, its acronym in English) until 1973. The competition has two categories, under-17s and under-20s, in the men, women, and mixed modalities.

Bolt is a Jamaican sprinter, an Olympic multi-champion, and a runner who holds various records. At the 2016 Olympic Games, Bolt achieved a historic triple-triple by winning three gold medals in three consecutive Olympic Games.
