Researchers at Nara Women’s University in Japan have discovered two species of sea slugs that can generate a new body after their heads are cut off. This was revealed in a study published in the journal Current Biology on March 8th. After the head is separated from the body, it continues to move. In seven days, the research team observed that important organs, such as the heart, grew again while the rest of the body gradually disappeared.

Slugs are not the only animals that can regenerate body parts after losing them. This also happens, for example, with octopuses, which produce new tentacles if they get cut off. However, this is the first time that most of an animal’s body has been regenerated.
