The Pacaembu stadium, in the city of São Paulo, will get an e-sports (electronic sports) arena. The plan is for the space to become the largest Battle Royale e-sports arena in the world, with an area of three thousand square metres (almost half a football field) and seating for two thousand spectators.
The structure, which will be housed under the orange bleachers of the venue, will be inaugurated on April 26th, 2023, which is the stadium’s anniversary. Before that, in April 2021, since the stadium will not host football matches until 2023, a temporary structure for e-games will be set up on the field.
“Today, we [people involved in e-sports] don’t have a home. I think we need a space like the arena”, said the game narrator gORDOx at the project’s presentation event.
Without football
One of the reasons for Pacaembu to not host football matches until 2023 is that it is being remodelled. Renovations are scheduled to start in late 2020 and will last at least two years.
Also, according to Allegra Pacaembu, the company managing the stadium, it would not be possible to have matches before remodelling starts because the grass has been severely damaged by the temporary field hospital. In April, the city of São Paulo set up a medical facility in Pacaembu to care for patients with Covid-19. It was deactivated in late June due to a decrease in the number of patients, according to the City Hall.
