Four biologists travelled to Kure, a Hawaiian island where no humans live, in February. They only found out about the new coronavirus pandemic in November after they returned from the island. They went to the island to care for the beaches, by cleaning up pieces of plastic and fishing nets, for example.

Even though people they knew sent them news about a virus, the foursome could not imagine the dimension of Covid-19. They did not expect to come back to people wearing masks on the streets and being told to avoid hugging or shaking hands. Charlie Thomas is one of the members of the group. He summarized his surprise with the phrase: “I never saw anything like this”.
