TOKYO, JAPAN - AUGUST 19: A man exits after using a toilet made of coloured smart glass which turns opaque when the cubicle is locked, on August 19, 2020 in Tokyo, Japan. The toilet, designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, is intended to allow users to check cleanliness and occupancy from the outside and is part of the Tokyo Toilet project which is redesigning 17 of the the Japanese capitals public toilets with different designers. Two parks in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, had public bathrooms with clear walls installed in early August. The project “The Tokyo Toilet” is a technological experiment. As soon as the user locks the door, the walls turn opaque. This way, no one outside the bathroom can see the inside when it is being used.

According to the initiative’s website, the goal is to let people who are not in the bathroom, know it is clean and empty. A team from CNN Travel, an American website and news channel, visited one of the bathrooms after it was operational. CNN warned that the mirrors on the inside make it impossible to know if the walls have become opaque. For this reason, it is very important for the user to make sure the door is locked.
