On April 19th, researchers in the United States and United Kingdom published a study that analyzed parrots’ social skills in video calls. After a period of training for the birds to learn to call each other by clicking on the images on a tablet, the parrots revealed they even had preferences: some birds became more popular than the others and received more calls. The study was carried out with 18 birds and recorded 147 calls made by the parrots themselves.

The study particularly showed scientists these birds’ social traits when in groups and flocks: they sing, play, and interact. The study was published in the Proceedings of the 2023 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.
