The Hollywood Film Academy (group of professionals in the field), in the United States, announced on September 8th that new rules would be adopted to encourage diversity among nominees for the best Oscar movie. The measures are intended to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the film industry, such as Blacks and Latinos.

There are four new criteria:

• Have members of groups that are poorly represented in main or supporting roles (which are important for the story, even if they are not the main characters), have 30% of the cast made up of these groups or have the main story be focused on them.

• Have a minimum number (not yet disclosed) of members of groups that are poorly represented in leadership positions, such as director and movie producer, or have 30% of the team be made up by members of these groups.

• Offer internships or apprenticeships to members of underrepresented groups.

• Have people in leadership positions (in marketing or studio and film companies’ distribution teams) who belong to underrepresented groups.

Production that fulfil two of the prerequisites on the list will be eligible for nomination for the best film Oscar. The new rules do not apply to other categories, such as best animation or best soundtrack, and will start to be applied at the 2024 edition.
