The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana , announced on March 23rd that the re-inauguration of the National Museum in the city of Rio de Janeiro will take place in the first semester of 2026. Until now, the museum, which was destroyed in a 2018 fi re, was expected to reopen in 2027. According to the minister, who visited the museum at the end of March, construction work is ahead of schedule.

“We are talking to our partners, we will secure the funds and move up the dates,” said Camilo Santana. “The total investment is 440 million or 450 million reais, we still have to raise 180 million, that is our mission now,” he said in an interview in front of the museum.

What is the National Museum?

The institution was created during the reign of the Portuguese monarch Dom João VI in 1818. At first, it was situated at another location in Rio de Janeiro. In 1892, the collection moved to the current building in Quinta da Boa Vista, which was the residence of the Portuguese royal family and the Brazilian imperial family until 1889.

The National Museum had the largest history of natural science collection in Latin America. During the fire in 2018, 85% of close to 20 million items was destroyed. In September 2022, part of the construction work was concluded with the completion of the entrance and the garden in front of the palace.
