Level 2

How about surfing or hiking up a mountain while playing the violin? That is the life of music teacher Nuno Santos, who always carries the instrument on his back. He launched the project “A Violin in the Most Unlikely Places”. Through this project he has taken music to the sea or to high altitudes for the past 10 years.

Nuno has already surfed giant waves in the Praia do Norte beaches in Portugal and climbed the mountains in South Africa accompanied by his instrument. “Music and sports have been a part of my life since I was five,” he says.

Born in Nazaré, a Portuguese tourist village 150 kilometres from Lisbon, Nuno prefers to play the violin while surfing rather than hiking up mountains, because the altitude requires special training and adaptation. Despite this, the musician says that there are no limits as to where he would go. “My project for the next few years is to play violin in the highest mountain of each of the continents and surf the biggest waves in all seven seas.”

Questions

– Is it amazing that someone could surf and play the violin at the same time?
– What kind of music would you like to hear at high altitudes?
