The longest commercial flight ever landed in New York, in the United States on October 12th after a 17 hours and 52 minutes trip from Singapore. The Airbus A350-900 aircraft flew 16,500 kilometres and was able to stay aloft for up to 20 hours.

There were 161 passengers on board, as well as 13 crewmembers, two pilots, and two co-pilots who took turns working shifts during the flight.

The main goal for Singapore Airlines, the company responsible for the novelty, was to make the journey more convenient for its passengers, by avoiding connections or having to change planes during a trip because of aircraft fuel storage limitations, for example.

To make passengers more comfortable, the Airbus A350-900 also has a higher ceiling, larger windows, and a different type of lighting. Additionally, the dishes served on the flight are made from food that does not produce gas or bloating.

Before this new record, the longest operating flight was the Qatar Airways one that flew for 17 hours and 45 minutes between Auckland, New Zealand and Doha, Qatar. Among international flights out of Brazil, the longest one is between São Paulo and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates and lasts 14 hours.
