Argentinean Lionel Messi, voted the best football player in the world six times, is a new member of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) from France. The team announced the signing on August 10th, with Messi expected to stay at the club for up to two years.

On the same day, Messi participated in a press conference with journalists in Paris, France. The 34-year-old pro said he was happy. “I can’t wait to meet my new teammates … and get to work,” he said. “I have a lot of ambition, just like Paris Saint-Germain. I’m here to win and win titles with my new club.”

At PSG, the striker will join a team that has great players, including Brazilian Neymar, Frenchman Mbappé, and Argentinean Di Maria. No date has been set for Messi’s debut.

On August 5th, Spain’s Barcelona announced that Messi would no longer be a part of the team. According to the club’s president, Joan Laporta, both the club and the player wanted to continue working together. However, it was not possible to keep the striker on because of a rule in La Liga, the organization that manages the first division of Spanish football.

The rule prevents teams from spending more than what they earned in the previous season. Because of factors such as the pandemic, Barcelona has not earned a significant profit in recent months. Even after Messi agreed to reduce his annual pay by almost 50%, the club was still unable to pay the player while complying with the La Liga rule at the same time.

Messi has been on the Spanish team for 20 years. It all started in 2000, when he was 13 and was already showing a gift for football. He had a growth problem and was short for his age. Noticing the young Argentinean’s potential, Barcelona invited him to play in the youth category and agreed to pay for the treatment that would help him grow. So, Messi moved to Spain.

Four years later, he made his debut on the main team. Since then, Messi has scored 672 goals and won 35 titles wearing the Barcelona shirt.
