Brazilian muralist Eduardo Kobra painted a panel at the entrance of the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, in the United States. The artwork was inaugurated on September 16th. It is part of a set of over 20 works by different artists spread throughout the city to celebrate the 77th UN General Assembly, which took place between September 20th and 27th and brought together representatives from over 190 nations to discuss current issues.

The aim of the painting is to draw attention to the importance of sustainability, one of the topics discussed at the event. To that end, Kobra depicted a Brazilian father handing over planet Earth to his daughter. The part of the globe shown is South America, where the Amazon rainforest is located. It is one of the most important rainforests in the world and should be preserved. Trees that join together in the shape of arrows symbolize important concepts such as recycling and complement the painting.

To make the panel, it took Kobra close to a year, from negotiating with the UN to imagining and planning the work. It is approximately 336 square meters (m2), the equivalent of half a futsal fi eld which is about 800 m2. The actual painting of the panel lasted less than a week so it could coincide with the date of the General Assembly. The artist wanted people who viewed the artwork and especially the heads of state who passed by it during the event – to question the kind of world they would be leaving for the future, represented by the image of a child.
