Fra John Critien is a knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (a country in Europe). He has been the only resident of the isolated Sant’Angelo Fort since 1998.

The order was founded around 1099 in Jerusalem (currently Israel). It is a Roman Catholic cavalry based on pride and charity.

There are other knights of the Order on the island of Malta, but Fra John Critien is the only one to have taken the vows (which include obedience).

He is the only person that can be truly considered a knight of the Order of Malta who lives in Malta. Aside from him, there are only another 55 knights in this organisation who have taken the vows.
