According to a survey by the UNHCR (the UN Agency for Refugees), released on September 7th, only 34% of young refugees around the world are enrolled in secondary education (from the 6th year of elementary school to the end of high school) for 2021. Although the rate is the same as the one observed between March 2019 and March 2020, the survey points out that, in some cases, the pandemic could have made it even more challenging for children and teenagers to have access to schools.

To come up with this number, the UNHCR carried out a survey in 40 countries. In almost all of them, enrolment is lower than the number of young people living in sheltering communities (such as refugee camps). This means that not all children and teenagers who live in these places are in school.

Also, according to the document, another issue that refugees face is the lack of resources to meet their needs. Some examples would be adequate learning material – since, in many cases, they have classes in a language that is different from their own – and schools providing technology to prevent a bigger gap between students who have online access and those who do not.
