Tatiana B., 11, was looking for an article about Harry Potter on the JOCA website when she read about the drawing contest proposed by J. K. Rowling, the author of the saga. The article explained that the writer had launched an online book, called The Ickabog, during the Covid-19 pandemic and invited children from all over the world to participate in the contest. The best drawings from each territory would be included in the book’s printed version.
At the end of August, Tatiana received the news that her drawing was among the 34 that had been chosen to feature in the Brazilian version of the book. “My parents encouraged me to draw even if I didn’t win, because it wouldn’t cost anything to do the drawing”, she explains. Tatiana chose to portray her favourite scene of the story and made several sketches before the final result. “My drawing is about friendship, because there is a very beautiful scene in which the main character climbs up on Ickabog, who is a friend of hers, and fights for his rights”.
The young woman started to enjoy drawing last year when she began working with graphite pencils. However, it was during social isolation, after enrolling in a course that taught her how to depict galaxies with watercolours, that she really started to devote herself to it.
About the contest, she told JOCA that: “I was very happy because it is a very powerful memento. Twenty years from now I will be able to open the book and see that it was who I drew it!” As an award, the winners will choose and receive ten of the author’s books, a copy of The Ickabog with J. K. Rowling’s signature, and twenty copies of the book for donation. “I’m going to donate to the library I went to when I was a kid and that I really liked. It is a library that encourages children to read and I think they will be well used there”, says Tatiana.
Those who are curious to see the JOCA reader’s drawing will have to wait for the book to be published in Portuguese. The worldwide launch has been scheduled for November 10th.
The Ickabog
J. K. Rowling’s new book is a fairy tale about the relationship between King Fred the Brave and the people of his country, Cornucopia (a fictional nation). Everything seemed to be going well in the kingdom until it was discovered that the legend about a monster, the Ickabog, was real.
