According to a report from the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) released on March 26th, international tourism is set to drop between 20% to 30% in 2020 in comparison to 2019 due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

To prevent the virus from spreading, several countries, including Brazil, the United States, and China, are barring foreigners from entering their territories and keeping their citizens at home, which is reducing the number of trips around the world.

Arrivals by international tourists totaled 1.5 billion dollars last year, but because of the covid-19 restrictions, this amount could decrease to 1.05 billion dollars this year – a figure that the international travel sector had reached five to seven years ago.

The Secretary-General of the UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvilim, states in the report that “tourism is one of the economic sectors most affected by the crisis.” He also warns that “millions of jobs are at risk of being lost. However, tourism is united to help face this major health emergency – which is our first priority.”

On April 1st, the UNWTO released a document with recommendations for governments and companies to help the tourism sector minimize the consequences of the pandemic. Among them are incentives to maintain jobs, tax reduction so tourism companies can continue to grow after the crisis, and sales to encourage consumers to travel whenever possible.
