During the qualifying practice for the Monza Grand Prix (GP) in Italy on September 5th, British racer Lewis Hamilton got pole position with the fastest lap in Formula One history. He covered the course in one minute, 18 seconds and 887 thousandths. He surpassed Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen, who was the previous record holder. In 2004, Raikkonen completed a lap in one minute, 19 seconds and 119 thousandths.

In the interview after the race, Hamilton said he was pleased with the record and concerned about some of the changes he had to make for that phase.  “I’m generally really happy with the actual laps I did…I made some big changes going in to qualifying, so I was a little bit nervous going in that it was the right thing to do but it worked just fine” he said.

Despite the record, on the next day Hamilton did not perform as well in the GP, finishing the race in seventh place. The champion was French Pierre Gasly.

Grand Prix vs. qualifying session

Grand Prix (GP) is the name given to official Formula One races. The day before the GP, drivers participate in qualifying sessions. Whoever has the best performance during the practice session starts in the pole position.  At the GP, the pole position starts first with an advantage over the opponents.
