In the city of Yokohama, Japan, Gundam Factory is building a giant robot that moves by itself. The model is 18 metres high (about the height of a seven-story building) and weighs 25 tons. The first tests started on September 21st.

The robot is inspired by the Japanese cartoon Mobile Suit Gundam, which was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate in 1979. In the story, an interplanetary war takes place and the only way to win is by creating giant robots, the Gundams, that can fly and fight. Animation is very popular in Japan and has already produced films, books, and toys.

The realistic version being created now is the same size as the one in the anime. Additionally, it has the same colorscolours and shapes as the main Gundam. All of the robot’s movements are operated through an external control cabin.

Fans will be able to visit the facility, where there will also be a food court and stores with official products. The inauguration, previously scheduled for October 2020, has been postponed because of the new coronavirus pandemic and should only take place in 2021.

More than one

This is not Japan’s first full-size Gundam. A previous one was assembled in 2009 on the island of Odaiba. It is still there today, but it does not move as much as the new Yokohama version.
