FIFA 2021 was the best-selling video game on the European continent in 2020, according to a survey released on January 21st by GfK Entertainment, a company specializing in the cultural products market. The game, which simulates football matches, was the top one in sales in 16 of the 19 countries included in the survey.

This is the fourth time that FIFA leads video game sales in Europe. Previous versions, including FIFA 2018, FIFA 2019, and FIFA 2020, were the top sellers on the continent in 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Another best-selling sports themed game on the 2020 bestseller list is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In it, participants compete in an auto race. It placed third. Second place went to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, a series of games in which users create houses and interact with animals.

Team of the Year without Messi

Every year, EA Sports, the company that produces FIFA, runs the “Team of the Year” campaign. For the campaign, fans vote for the best football players over the last 12 months for each of the positions. The 11 most voted athletes by the public receive “impulses” and become more powerful in the video game.

This year’s selection, however, drew attention to the fact that Lionel Messi, from Barcelona, was not among the most voted even though the striker came in third in The Best FIFA (award given by the International Federation of Association Football- FIFA -which elects the best players of the year).
