After five racism cases took place during matches at the Copa Libertadores da América 2022, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has modified Article 17 of its Disciplinary Code, which deals with discrimination. The changes were announced in an official statement by the entity on May 9th and will go into effect for the current tournament.
With the changes, the fine for any association or club whose supporters disrespect someone (based on skin color, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, language, creed, or origin) is now US$100,000. Previously, it was US$ 30,000 (about 153,600 reais). Also, it is up to Conmebol to suspend games, players, or to decree that matches take place behind closed doors (i.e., without fans in the stadium) or with a reduced audience. “CONMEBOL urges [encourages] participating clubs to disseminate educational messages, raise awareness, develop ideas and strategies in order to improve sporting values and eradicate all forms of discrimination in football”, concludes the organization in the article that was modified.
Disciplinary Code: set of rules that determines how a certain group of people should behave, establishing rights, duties and limits. A code is divided into parts that deal with different topics, called articles.
Discrimination: the act of treating someone disrespectfully, usually due to the person’s ethnicity, skin color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or other conditions.
