Once again, the cherry blossom season in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, has started earlier than usual. On March 14th, a representative of the Tokyo District Meteorological Observatory announced that the fi rst trees had blossomed at the Yasukuni Sanctuary. Thus, the season that was only expected to begin on March 24th, beat its early start record again.

The statement was made after more than five cherry blossoms, known as sakura, appeared on the trees that the observatory uses as markers of the start of the season. According to the employee who made the announcement, the earlier bloom can be explained by warmer days in March and also by climate change.

The last few years have also been marked by the early arrival of these flowers: in 2022, the season started on the 20th; while in 2020 and 2021, it started on March 14th, the same day as this year.

Cherry Blossom Season

The sakura is very popular in Japan at this time of the year. Cherry blossom season, which lasts about a week, is marked by festivals and picnics in di_ erent cities in Japan. This is the fi rst time since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic that the sakura festivities, known as hanami, will take place without the restrictions that were imposed to contain the new coronavirus. For example, locals and tourists will be able to meet without masks.
