A new study was carried out by the University of Tohoku, in Japan, and released in the beginning of April. It shows a projection that by 2531 all Japanese people might have Sato, the most common in the country, as their last name. Professor Hiroshi Yoshida led the study at the university’s Center for Social and Economic Research on Aging. According to him, two factors are contributing to this: the decrease in the country’s birth rate, and the Japanese law that determines that, after getting married, every couple must choose a last name for the family.
