In times of social isolation due to the new coronavirus, a few museums that are currently closed to the public have launched a challenge to entertain those who are staying home. The plan is to recreate works of art with at least three items found at home and post the photo on social media.

The idea came from the Dutch Instagram account Tussen Kunst & Quarantaine (Between Art and Quarantine) created in March especially for this. The Rijksmuseum in Holland and the J. Paul Getty and Metropolitan Museums in the United States soon started following it.

The museums encourage people to check out the artwork on their digital archives and pick a painting, sculpture, or photograph to reproduce with items found in day-to-day life. This way, those who participate learn about art while they have fun recreating the scenes. Check out some of the more creative ones and get inspired to create your own!

Step by step

Want to take part in the challenge? Check out the tips below, ask an adult for help, and get to work!

1) Browse museum sites and choose a work of art that catches your attention.
2) Search your home for what you could use to recreate it. You must use at least three items: you can use yourself, your family, your pet, food, or objects like pencils, clothes, and furniture.
3) Pay attention to the background of the artwork, its colors and lights. Try to find a corner that looks similar in your home to replicate the scenery.
4) Time to take the shot! Ask someone to help you take the picture.
