What if instead of portraying a woman, the famous painting called Dora Maar by Spanish painter Pablo Picasso exhibited a dog? Now, imagine that a dog is portrayed on the canvas of Abaporu, by Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral. This is the idea of the new Arte Vira-Lata calendar, launched by the non-governmental organization (NGO) Celebridade Vira-Lata in early October.
The Argentine artist Tarik Klein, who lives in Brazil, was invited to re-create classic paintings, using dogs as protagonists in the works. The dogs are featured in the 2021 calendar, which is for sale on the NGO’s website. The artist’s original paintings will be auctioned (that is, sold to the highest bidder) virtually. The funds from the auction and from the calendars’ sales will go towards taking care of street animals in poor regions of the city of São Paulo.
In addition to the images, the names of the works have also been adapted. Self-portrait, by Russian Wassily Kandinsky, became “Auaurrvalho” and Tropical, by Brazilian Anita Malfatti, became “Tropicão”. Each page of the calendar includes the story of a stray dog that the Celebrity Vira-Lata sheltered and helped.
